PART 1
You're Not Crazy, and Neither Are They

Something has shifted in this country, and everyone can feel it.

Maybe you've watched it play out at a distance—in news clips of rallies, in comment sections, in the rhetoric of politicians saying things that would have ended careers twenty years ago. Maybe you've experienced it closer: a family gathering that became a minefield, an old friendship that quietly dissolved, a coworker whose views seemed to harden into something unrecognizable.

Or maybe you've simply opted out entirely. You don't engage with that uncle anymore. You've muted or unfollowed. You've decided it's not worth it. You've built a life where you rarely encounter people on the other side of this divide—and honestly, that's been easier.

Wherever you stand, you've probably asked some version of the same question: What is going on?

How did we get to a place where millions of Americans seem to operate from a completely different version of reality? Where anger and blame have become the default mode of political engagement? Where people defend the indefensible, dismiss what they once would have condemned, and treat compromise as betrayal?

It's tempting to write it off. They're stupid. They're hateful. They're beyond reach.

But that explanation has never quite felt complete, has it? Because some of these people aren't stupid—you know that. Some of them were kind once, or still are in other contexts. Some of them are your family members, and you remember who they were before. And some of them are strangers you'll never meet, but you can't shake the feeling that something was done to them, even if you can't name what.

This series is an attempt to name it.


What We're Actually Dealing With

The word we need is indoctrination.

Not as an insult. Not as a way to dismiss people. But as an accurate description of a process—a process that has been deliberately designed, systematically funded, and implemented over decades to reshape how millions of Americans perceive reality.

Indoctrination isn't a word we typically apply to our own country. We associate it with authoritarian regimes, with cults, with faraway places where propaganda is obvious and heavy-handed. But indoctrination doesn't require a dictator or a compound in the wilderness. It can happen gradually, through familiar screens and trusted voices, in living rooms and churches and car radios. It can happen so slowly that the people experiencing it never notice the shift—because there is no single moment of shift. There's only the slow accumulation of messages, day after day, year after year.

The word comes from the Latin doctrina, meaning "teaching." Originally neutral, it simply meant instruction. But after the propaganda campaigns of the World Wars, it took on its modern meaning: teaching someone to accept beliefs uncritically, without question or independent examination.

The key distinction between education and indoctrination isn't what is taught—it's how. Education encourages questions, welcomes debate, acknowledges uncertainty. Indoctrination demands conformity, punishes doubt, claims absolute certainty, and treats questioning as betrayal.


It's Not Stupidity. It's Something Else.

Here's the part that's hard to accept, especially if you're angry: indoctrination doesn't target the weak-minded. It targets the human-minded.

Research on cult recruitment consistently shows that it doesn't succeed by finding people with psychological deficiencies. It succeeds by finding people experiencing life transitions, stress, social isolation, or a search for meaning—and exploiting universal cognitive biases that exist in every human brain.

Confirmation bias. Cognitive dissonance. In-group loyalty. The need to belong. The desire for simple explanations in a complex world. These aren't character flaws—they're features of human cognition. We all have them. They're what make us social creatures capable of cooperation and community.

They're also what make us vulnerable to manipulation.

The people who seem lost to you aren't fundamentally different from you. They're not dumber than you, and they're not morally inferior to you (or at least, they weren't at the start). They simply found themselves in the path of an information ecosystem designed to exploit normal human psychology—often through choices that seemed completely innocuous at the time.

Tuning in to a talk radio host during a commute. Clicking on a recommended video. Attending a church that gradually became more political. Joining a Facebook group. Each choice led to another, and another, and another, until they were immersed in an environment specifically engineered to shape their perception of reality.

This happened over years. Often decades. The pot heated so gradually that they never noticed the water starting to boil.


The Visible vs. The Hidden

When we look at the MAGA movement from the outside, what we see is anger. Hostility. Blame. A readiness to hate, to mock, to dehumanize. We see people who seem energized by cruelty, who cheer for policies that hurt vulnerable people, who treat politics like a sport where the goal is to make the other side suffer.

That's real. I'm not going to pretend it isn't, or minimize the harm it causes.

But it's not the whole picture.

Underneath the anger—fueling it, shaping it, being deliberately stoked by those who profit from it—is fear.

Most of the people caught up in this don't experience themselves as afraid. They experience themselves as warriors, as truth-tellers, as the last line of defense for everything they hold dear. The fear has been alchemized into aggression. That's not an accident. That's the point.

We'll go deeper into the psychological mechanics in Part 4 of this series. For now, just hold this: the anger you see is real, but it's the visible symptom of something else. And understanding what that "something else" is—where it comes from, how it was manufactured, who benefits from it—is the first step toward knowing what we're actually up against.


A Note on Honesty

This series focuses primarily on right-wing indoctrination—the MAGA movement, Christian Nationalism, and the media ecosystem that feeds them—because that's where the most sophisticated, best-funded, and most politically consequential infrastructure exists today.

But I want to be clear about something from the start: indoctrination is a human vulnerability, not a partisan one.

The left has its own echo chambers and blind spots. The Democratic Party's decades of complacency helped create the conditions for what we're now witnessing. Progressives can be tribal, smug, and dismissive in ways that make the problem worse, not better.

We'll address all of that honestly in Part 3. Not to "both sides" the issue—because the scale, the infrastructure, and the relationship to democracy itself are genuinely different—but because intellectual honesty makes us stronger, not weaker. And because understanding our own failures is essential to not repeating them.

What we're witnessing isn't a sudden break or a mysterious madness. It's the predictable result of a decades-long project to reshape reality for millions of Americans—a project that exploited normal human psychology, was funded by people who knew exactly what they were doing, and succeeded in part because the other side failed to take it seriously.

You're not crazy for feeling like something is deeply wrong.

And the people caught up in it aren't crazy either—even when their beliefs seem to defy all evidence and their anger seems inexhaustible.

Something was done to them. Understanding what that something is—and who did it, and why, and how—is where we go next.
